Hilliard Roof Repair That Starts With the Last Repair
Most leaks we see on roofs with some age on them trace back to an earlier fix. A smear of tar, a shingle that never matched, flashing nailed over flashing. We find the real source, repair it the right way and tell you plainly what else we saw up there.
What Roof Repair Covers
Roof repair means fixing a section of the roof without tearing the whole thing off. That covers leaks, missing or loose shingles, failed flashing at walls and chimneys, cracked pipe boots and soft spots in the decking. If the rest of the roof still has good years in it, a repair is usually the smart money.
Older houses make this trickier. A roof may have been patched three times by three different people, with parts that are no longer made. We look at those old fixes before we add our own, because a new repair sitting on a bad one will not last.
Sometimes the honest answer is that a repair won't hold. When shingles crack as soon as you bend them on every slope, or the plywood gives underfoot in more than one spot, we will tell you and walk you through roof replacement instead.

What We Do on a Repair
- 01
Leak tracing
Water runs along rafters and decking before it shows on a ceiling. We follow the stain back to where the water actually gets in, which is often a few feet uphill from the spot.
- 02
Shingle replacement
We pull damaged shingles, check the underlayment beneath and set new ones with proper nailing. On a roof that has been up a while, we get as close a color match as current products allow and show you the sample first.
- 03
Wall, chimney and vent seals
Flashing where the roof meets a wall or chimney tends to fail years ahead of the shingles around it. So do the rubber boots that wrap each plumbing pipe. We replace those parts outright instead of smearing more sealant over the old ones.
- 04
Decking repair
Soft or rotted plywood gets cut out and replaced. On older houses with plank decking, we fit the repair to what is already there.
- 05
Undoing old patches
Tar patches, caulk over nail heads and mismatched shingles get removed where they are hiding trouble. You get a repair that sheds water on its own.
- 06
Photos and cleanup
We photograph what we found and what we fixed. Nails and old material are cleared from your yard and driveway before we leave.
Questions about Roof Repair?
Call(904) 709-7985Signs Your Roof Needs a Repair
Ceiling stains
Brown rings on a ceiling mean water got in at some point. Even if it has dried, the opening is likely still there.
Shingles in the yard
Pieces of shingle after a windy day mean the seal strips have let go. More will follow in the next blow.
Black patches on the roof
Shiny black spots are usually old tar repairs. They crack in the sun and often cover a problem nobody fixed properly.
Damp attic or musty smell
Our summer storms push a lot of water at a roof. A damp attic, dark spots on rafters or a mildew smell point to a slow leak.
Granules in the gutters
A little grit is normal. Heaps of it mean the shingles are wearing thin in spots.
What Happens on a Repair
- 1
A free look and estimate
We visit, climb the roof and check the attic when there's access. Your written estimate covers the repair plus anything else we spotted, with photos.
- 2
You pick when
We don't book the work until you give the go-ahead. Financing is available if you'd like to pay over time, and we can talk it through by phone.
- 3
Fixing the roof
Most repairs run from a few hours to a full day. We open the damaged spot, fix what's below it and seal it back up with new material.
- 4
Going over the work
Before we leave, we show you photos of the problem and the fix. The work is backed by our 5-year workmanship warranty.
What Changes the Price of a Repair
We can't price a repair until we've seen it, because the visible damage is often the smallest part. Your written estimate puts every piece of the job on its own line, so nothing gets lumped together. These are the things that move the number most.
- What's under the shingles
- A repair that stops at the shingles costs less than one that finds rotted decking. We show you photos before any extra work is done.
- Past repairs
- Layers of tar or old patches take time to strip off. On older roofs this is often the biggest added cost.
- Roof pitch and access
- Steep roofs and tight spots need more safety gear and slower work.
- Matching materials
- Discontinued shingles mean hunting for the closest match. Odd-sized or hard-to-find parts can take extra effort to source.
Roof Repair Questions
Can you match my old shingles?
Often close, rarely perfect. Shingles fade over the years and many past styles are no longer made. We bring samples and let you pick before we start.
Is a repair worth it on a roof that's getting up there in years?
When the trouble sits in one spot and the shingles everywhere else still flex without cracking, yes. If problems turn up on every slope, a repair just buys a short break. We'll tell you which one we see and show you why.
Do you just put more tar on it?
No. Tar is a short-term patch and dries out fast in Florida sun. We replace the failed part, whether that is a shingle, a boot or a piece of flashing.
Who does the work?
Roofing Hilliard is a licensed general contractor, and our own crew handles the repair. Your repair comes with a 5-year workmanship warranty.
Do you work outside Hilliard?
Yes. We do roof repair in Yulee, Nassau Village-Ratliff and Fernandina Beach, and across the state line in Kingsland, St. Marys and Folkston.
